The baffling English language Part 143

Yes, the English language can be very confusing sometimes, which is why it is often dangerous to rely on how a word sounds when it comes to writing it down. Truth is, there are many words that you simply have to know. A favourite that people often get wrong is not putting two ms in the word ‘accommodation’. We’ve even seen estate agents using one m and accommodation is their bread and butter, so you’d think they’d make sure how to spell it correctly.
The examples shown here represent another classic slip-up that people make on a regular basis, because when you say the word ‘separately’ it sounds like there’s an e in the middle. You’d write river and diner and winter… so why not seperately? Because you don’t is really the only answer. Just as accommodation needs two ms (although it’s obvious that many people don’t seem to think it does), so separately needs an a and not an e.
Clearly, as can be seen from both these photos, some mainstream manufacturers and organisations get it wrong, even on prominent packaging. Do they care that they’ve made a mistake? Well, let’s say it’s almost certainly not a top priority for them in the grand scheme of things. Does it make them bad companies? Absolutely not. Do their customers care? Many of them probably don’t. So does it really matter then? Most definitely (not definately, note). As any business person will tell you, it is vitally important to get things right… in every department.
If you are uncertain about getting your words right every single time, just take the worry away and ask the experts.
